Callie Hinder and Eliza Ashby will join the Centre of Excellence women’s program in Canberra.

Women's basketballers Callie Hinder (NSW / USA) and Eliza Ashby (VIC) will join Basketball Australia's Centre of Excellence in Canberra in September.

Hinder joins the program after a unique journey, as a dual Australian and American citizen, who led her high school team PHH Prep to the 2025 CAA Arizona State Championship.

“Callie Hinder brings legitimate size, shot-blocking capabilities, and a commanding interior presence,” COE women's program coach Mel Downer said.

“She’s a natural rim protector and rebounder. Callie can impact the games at both ends of the floor with her defensive instincts and finishing ability around the basket.”

At 6’6, Hinder is already a familiar face in the Australian basketball landscape. Callie is the daughter of Russell Hinder, a former AIS Scholarship recipient and Boomers alumni. She featured in the Under-19 Gems silver medal campaign at the FIBA Women’s World Cup and elected to return home to develop at the CoE with a commitment to the University of Arizona in 2026.

“Callie’s development at the CoE continues a proud family tradition of excellence in Australian basketball,” added Downer.

“After a silver medal appearance with the Gems at the recent U19 FIBA World Cup we are excited to continue Callie’s development as a premier centre at the CoE.”

Ashby has represented Victoria Country as a bottom-ager at the 2025 Under-18 Foot Locker National Championships, showcasing her scoring and rebounding ability.

Her performance at Nationals was acknowledged with selection in the Asia Cup Under-16 Sapphires’ extended squad and Downer was excited by Ashby’s potential.

“Eliza Ashby, a standout from country Victoria, brings versatility and toughness. Ashby is recognised for her competitive edge and potential to play multiple positions,” said Downer.

“Her work ethic and leadership combined with her length & athleticism have established her as one of the country’s most promising young players that could swing up or down in position as required.”

“Eliza also comes from a distinguished basketball pedigree, as the daughter of Karen Ashby, a former WNBL player who passed on her love for the game. That background, combined with Eliza’s determination, sets her apart as a rising talent.”

Hinder and Ashby will integrate into the Centre of Excellence program in early September.
