Illawarra Hawks to debut at global FIBA Intercontinental Cup in Singapore this September.

  • The Illawarra Hawks won the 2025 NBL Champions after beating Melbourne United in five games
  • Tasmania Jackjumpers represented Australia in 2024, winning the country's first medal, a bronze
  • The tournament returns to Singapore for a thirs straight year

The Illawarra Hawks will fly the flag for Australian basketball on the global stage this September, after being confirmed as one of six teams competing at the prestigious FIBA Intercontinental Cup 2025 in Singapore.

The reigning NBL champions will make their tournament debut alongside continental titleholders from five other regions, including Spain’s Unicaja, Brazil’s Flamengo, Japan’s Utsunomiya Brex, Libya’s Alahli SC, and NBA G League United from the United States.

The Hawks have been drawn into Group B alongside Flamengo and NBA G League United, setting up a blockbuster opening phase as they look to progress to the final. Group A will feature Unicaja, Utsunomiya Brex and Alahli SC. Each team plays a round-robin format within their group, with the top sides advancing to the final on 21 September. A third-place game and fifth-place playoff will also take place.

This marks the first time that the Illawarra Hawks will compete in the FIBA Intercontinental Cup, after the Tasmania JackJumpers were the most recent representative in 2024, winning Australia's first medal at the tournament, securing bronze.

The tournament returns to Singapore, which has hosted it since 2023 and saw 25,000 fans attend in-person last year and brought a large global broadcast audience.

FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis said, "The FIBA Intercontinental Cup reached a new milestone every single time during the past three years, realising step by step the dream of a truly intercontinental club competition."

"The response from the clubs, from the leagues, from our partners and from the Singapore public was overwhelmingly positive. This 35th edition is their reward for daring to dream, the consolidation of a daring vision," Mr. Zagklis added.

The FIBA Intercontinental Cup is the pinnacle of international club basketball, uniting champions from each continent. This 35th edition signals another major step forward in FIBA’s ambition to grow the global game and spotlight clubs from around the world on one stage.

The event will be held from 18–21 September at the Singapore Indoor Stadium, with tickets on sale now and free entry on opening day.
