Indigenous Basketball Australia dominates Poitūkohu Māori in international women's clash

Australian women's basketball stars Shaneice Swain and Monique Bobongie combined for 42 points and 18 rebounds to lead the Indigenous Basketball Australia (IBA)  to a dominant 93-61 win against Poitūkohu Māori at State Basketball Centre on Wednesday, June 11, 2025.

Swain's 26-point performance on both sides of the ball was the catalyst for the overwhelming 32-point victory.

Key Details

By the Numbers

  • Shaneice Swain (Indigenous Basketball Australia) starred with 26 points, seven rebounds, two assists, two blocks in 32 minutes.
  • Kayla Manuirirangi (Poitūkohu Māori) scored 11 points, and had five rebounds, three assists, one steal in 20 minutes.

What Happened

Indigenous Basketball Australia established control early and never looked back, gradually building their lead throughout the contest. The home side showcased superior shooting efficiency, finishing at 40 percent from the field compared to Poitūkohu Māori's disappointing 30 percent. IBA's bench provided crucial depth, contributing 28 points to help maintain pressure throughout all four quarters.

Swain was simply unstoppable, connecting on six of her 14 field goal attempts while adding seven rebounds. Her ability to score from multiple positions on the floor proved troublesome for the Māori defence. The standout performance included a stellar sequence midway through the third quarter where she scored seven consecutive points to push the lead beyond 20.

Australian Gems star Monique Bobongie provided excellent support with 16 points and 11 rebounds, recording the game's only double-double. Her efficient seven-of-nine shooting from the field helped establish IBA's interior dominance. Nes'eya Parker-Williams added 12 points and six rebounds while recording four steals, showcasing her defensive prowess.

The rebounding battle heavily favoured Indigenous Basketball Australia, who secured 45 boards compared to Poitūkohu Māori's 33. This advantage created numerous second-chance opportunities, with IBA converting these into 18 points. Defensively, Indigenous Basketball Australia recorded eight blocks and 14 steals, forcing 19 turnovers which they converted into 24 points.

For Poitūkohu Māori, Manuirirangi led with 11 points and five rebounds, while Vitoria Tuivale added 10 points and eight rebounds. Tiana Mangakahia distributed seven assists but struggled from the field, shooting just two-of-nine. The visitors particularly struggled from three-point range, connecting on just four of 25 attempts (16 percent), significantly limiting their ability to close the gap.
