Eight of Australia's best women's basketballers are now part of the WNBA in 2025

  • Australian Steph Talbot will play for the expansion franchise Golden State Valkyries
  • Chloe Bibby has been waived by the Golden State Valkyries
  • Shaniece Swain has signed with the Los Angeles Sparks

Eight of Australia's best women's basketball players are part of a WNBA franchise in 2025 after Shaniece Swain, Anneli Maley, Ally Wilson, Shyla Heal and Chloe Bibby waived during training camp.

These are the key dates for Aussies in the WNBA for 2025.

Georgia Amoore became the 13th player in the WNBA after being drafted by the Washington Mystics with the sixth pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft in New York on April 15, 2025 (AEST).

This is a quick guide to Australians in the WNBA and where they will play.

  1. Rebecca Allen — Forward: Chicago Sky
    Signed by the New York Liberty as a free agent following the 2014 World Cup. Debut: 2015
  2. Ezi Magbegor — Forward/Centre: Seattle Storm
    Selected round 1 (pick 12 overall) in the 2019 WNBA Draft by the Seattle Storm. Debut: 2020
  3. Jade Melbourne — Guard: Washington Mystics
    Selected round 3 (pick 33 overall) in the 2022 WNBA Draft by the Seattle Storm. Debut: 2023
  4. Alanna Smith — Power Forward: Minnesota Lynx
    Selected round 1 (pick 8 overall) in the 2019 WNBA Draft by the Phoenix Mercury. Debut: 2019
  5. Stephanie Talbot — Guard: Golden State Valkyries
    Selected round 3 (pick 33 overall) in the 2014 WNBA Draft by the Phoenix Mercury. Debut: 2017
  6. Sami Whitcomb — Shooting Guard: Phoenix Mercury
    Signed by the Seattle Storm as a free agent in February 2017. The WNBL 2024-25 MVP has signed with the Phoenix Mercury in 2025. Debut: 2017
  7. Georgia Amoore — Guard: Washington Mystics
    Georgia Amoore was drafted sixth by the Washington Mystics in the 2025 WNBA Draft on April 15, 2025. Amoore is out indefinitely with an ACL injury and may miss the entire 2025 season
  8. Kristy Wallace — Guard:  Indiana Fever
    Selected round 2 (pick 16 overall) in the 2018 WNBA Draft by the Atlanta Dream. Debut: 2022. Wallace said on February 25, 2025, she was out for the 2025 season. But the Fever have maintained her rights despite her contract being suspended.

    Drafted by the Atlanta Dream (pick 12 overall) in the WNBA Draft.
  2. Isobel Borlase — Forward: Atlanta Dream
    Drafted by the Atlanta Dream (pick 22 overall) in the WNBA Draft.

2025 WNBA Training Camp Waivers

Shaniece Swain — Guard: Los Angeles Sparks
Swain signed with the Los Angeles Sparks on February 6, 2025 after being drafted by the Southern California WNBA club in 2023. She was waived on Thursday, May 15, 2025.

Amy Atwell — Guard: Phoenix Mercury
Atwell signed a training camp contract with the Mercury in February but was waived soon after.

Chloe Bibby — Guard: Golden State Valkyries
Bibby signed with the expansion franchise Golden State on February 7, 2025. She was waived on Thursday, May 15, 2025

Anneli Maley — Forward: Los Angeles Sparks
Maley signed with the Los Angeles Sparks on Monday, February 3, 2025 but was waived at the start on May, 2025.

Ally Wilson — Guard: Chicago Sky
Wilson signed a training camp contract in late February but was waived on May, 12, 2025.

Shyla Heal — Guard: Phoenix MercuryHeal was signed to a training camp contract in mid March but was waived on May 10, 2025.
