Sandy Brondello's New York Liberty's quest to win back-to-back titles is firing on all cylinders, hammering Australian Opals point guard Jade Melbourne's Washington Mystics 85-63 at Capital One Arena on Saturday, May 31, 2025.
Sabrina Ionescu's 28-point performance kept the Liberty perfect on the season while Melbourne played 16 minutes off the bench, finishing with just four points on 2-from-4 from the field.

What Happened
The Liberty established control early, jumping to a 27-17 lead after the first quarter. They maintained their advantage throughout, leading by 12 at halftime and extending the margin to 18 points by the end of the third quarter. New York outscored Washington in every period, displaying their dominance from start to finish.
Jonquel Jones controlled the glass for New York, collecting a game-high 18 rebounds including three offensive boards. Her presence was felt defensively as well, with two blocks and two steals while adding 14 points. The Liberty never trailed in the contest, building their lead to as many as 26 points in the fourth quarter.
Ionescu's efficient night featured 9-from-16 shooting from the field, including 4-from-11 from beyond the arc and a perfect 6-from-6 from the free-throw line. Leonie Fiebich added 12 points on 4-from-5 shooting and nine rebounds, while Stewart contributed 10 points, seven assists and three rebounds despite shooting just 3-from-10.
The Liberty's defensive intensity stifled Washington's offense, holding the Mystics to a dismal 28.4 per cent from the field (21-from-74). New York also dominated the rebounding battle 46-36, with Jones' 18 boards leading the way. The Liberty's rim protection was exceptional, recording eight blocks compared to just one for the Mystics.
With this victory, New York improves to 6-0 on the season, maintaining their grip on first place in the WNBA standings. The Mystics fall to 3-4, dropping to eighth position and continuing their struggle to find consistency early in the season.
