The Perth Wildcats have finally landed their import point guard, signing NBA G League Finals MVP Mason Jones to a one-year deal.
Jones, 27, is a combo guard who has spent four years in the NBA system with the Houston Rockets, Philadelphia 76ers, Los Angeles Lakers and most the Sacramento Kings, appearing in 51 games during his career.
Standing at six foot four, he will provided Perth with additional size and strength that they have lacked at the guard positions for numerous seasons. Last season he split time between the NBA and G-League with the Sacramento and Stockton Kings.
He had a ridiculous G-League year, averaging 23.5 points, 5.1 rebounds and 7.4 assists in the regular season, before having a 30.4 and 8.4 assist post season. Helping the Kings to a championship.
Before turning pro, he played two years at the University of Arkansas, starting with NBA Champion Isaiah Joe where he averaged 17.6 points, 4.6 rebounds and 3.1 assists in his two seasons before he went undrafted in 2020.
This won’t be his first time playing overseas, as he had a short stint in Turkey playing in the BSL for Darussafaka Lassa, playing just eight games in 2023 due to salary cap complications.
Perth Wildcats GM of Basketball Danny Mills said he was thrilled with the addition of Jones to the roster.
“He’s a dynamic guard with the ability to play both on and off the ball, score at all three levels, and make a strong impact as an efficient playmaker with his passing and basketball IQ,” he said.
Jones will attempt to fill the void left by five-time MVP and soon to be naturalised Bryce Cotton, who left the Wildcats to join the Adelaide 36ers.
Head coach John Rillie says the timing of the signing couldn’t have come sooner.
“I’m looking forward to getting Mason on the floor with our group as Sept 20 is fast approaching,” Rillie said.
“His scoring ability paired with his skill set to involve his teammates at the offensive end, will add a nice dynamic to our group.”
This signing completes the Perth roster. He joins the Wildcats alongside new additions Jo Lual-Acuil Jr, Sunday Dech, Lat Mayen and next star Noa Kouakou-Heugue.
They start their season on September 20th, hosting the Tasmania JackJumpers at RAC Arena.
